Volunteer firefighter: Physical?!
Question: I'm getting my physical tomorrow as a process of becoming a volunteer fire fighter. My friend who's in the department says there's a certain requirement for the results of the Lung/spirometry test. Has anyone been through or know what the requirement to pass is?
I don't have asthma or anything, and from other regular physicals from my physician, nothing's been wrong..Would this give me a good chance of passing everything?

You have to breathe on a machine and 2 things are measured
Volume and force of breath. The Idea is to test your lungs to see if their could be any possibility's of you having complications when under stress of fighting fires in oxygen scarce conditions. they do not necessarily want you to see how long you can hold your breath but they want to know your lung capacity and your breathing strength. That is the only way I know to splain it in layman terms. I could have gotten fancy and gave some high dollar rigamarole but bottom dollar it is a strength test of the lungs.
