Question: There are all kinds of places that offer massage therapy, and some that might do extra things that might be morally/ ethically/ legally questionable. How do I know if a place is reputable so I don't put myself at risk?

check with your local states office of professions. If the massage therapist is licensed with the state, it'll be on that list and more than likey reputable. Also check with your therapist for their current licensure status and if they have a relationship with a professional organization such as ABMP. Also, some states base their licensure on the National Certification, you can look that up by searching for National Certification in Massage Therapy and Bodywork (some states don't recognize this certification, NY and NB are two, so check with your state first to see what their certification requirements are).
You can also get a referral from your Chiropractor or General Practioner, most of them have several therapists they refer to these days.

You can look for a therapist that is part of a medical clinic or hospital, or check to see if the therapist is covered by medical insurance companies. Many states in the US require licenses - Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT).
