you pinch it slightly and lean FORWARD.... otherwise the blood runs back into your throat.. my son AND my older brother get chronic nose bleeds... they happen at any time and have NO apparent reason for happening but as soon as one starts, they lean forward and pinch their nose for a minute or two and the bleeding stops... I'm TRYING to convince my son to go have his nose cauterized.....

You really don't have to do either. You should pinch your nose tightly. If you hold your head back you could choke on the blood, if you hold it forward the pressure that is built up will cause it to bleed more. Just pinch it tightly to provide pressure. Just like you would any other place. The blood will clot and you will be fine. If the bleeding doesn't stop after a good 5 mins or so and it is an excessive amount then go to the ER.
