Does this sound like dehydration?!

Question: I've been sleeping most of the day yesterday and today. Yesterday I stood up from my bed, took a few steps, and felt as though I was going to faint. I could feel my eyes rolling back as I started to stumble backwards, but caught myself from falling. I have been eating a lot these past two days so it wasn't due to not eating. I decided to drink/eat something, but it hasn't helped. I took 5 sips of O.J this morning, and feel asleep for 4 hours. I'm also having loose stools as of this morning.

I have recently lost a large amount of weight due to surgery.

What do you think is wrong?

Could be anemia, dehydration, or any number of things. Contact your doctor right away.

Good luck,

I'm not sure. I would get to the emergency room though.

A simple test to see if you are dehydrated is use the bathroom, look at the color of your...pee...and if it is dark or really dark, you are dehydrated. Atleast that's what I perform.

Ways to check for dehydration

Pich the top of ur hand, if the skin takes a sec to go back down, ur mildly dehydrated,
Push on ur fingernails,
if it takes a min to return to normal color, ur dehydrated, ur eyes will be dry, u will be weak
And listless,
Lethergic

no no its not. its just the fact that u were in bed for so long and when u stand up all the blood goes to ur head. it happens to me also when i sit for a long time. u may just be recovering from surgery

well im not sure..but it does sound like dehydration..just drink a lot of water and eat healthy. You might also want to check in with your doctor and tell him how you are feeling.

Could be early signs of the Flu. I recently got over it and had the same problems. I slept for 2 days straight, when I got up I felt like I was freezing.

Since you just had surgery though I would give your doc a call and explain to him what is happening, he can better assess the issue.

Remeber to drink at least 8 12 oz cups of water a day. Good luck.

To me its sounds like your recent surgery is causing complications. Dehydration may be a factor but dehydration alone wouldn't cause the symptoms your describing.

I would call your doctor and tell him your symptoms and let him decide if its serious

I hope this helped
get well soon

I don't know much about medical stuff because I am not yet in med or nursing school, but I do know some by reading medical books and by school. It does sound a lot like dehydration and if you have persistant headaches, feel nauseous, dizzy or have loose stools, it probably is. Dehydration can lead to worse symptoms, so it's best to catch up on your water drinking. Try to get in at least 8 cups a day, get electrolytes through sports drinks or SmartWater, and stay away from very salty and high sodium products for the next few days. I hope this helps.

Please check your blood sugar level. It sounds like your blood sugar may be high. It may not be that, but it also good to know what it is not. If you have any Diabetic friends they should definitly have a blood testing kit. Good luck

Sounds like your blood pressure was low. Sometimes when we wake up our hearts are still beating slowly and when we stand up the blood doesn't flow to our heads very quick which causes us to feel lightheaded. Your body is still healing so just take it easy for a while and pace yourself when you get up.

Do you actually call 5 sips of anything drinking? You need 6-8 glasses of water a day. Sounds like dehydration and possibly a problem with your body's ability to produce insulin to handle what you are eating--which is what, by the way? Are you eating quality carbs and proteins or just junk? I really think you need to go to a doctor asap!

While I don't know what your surgery was for, I had two surgeries over the summer and I'll tell you that I did nothing but sleep for like weeks after. If you are on any time of pain management medication, like oxycodone or percocets, they make you very light headed.

If you are on medication, I am almost certain that you are reacting negativley to it.
You also mentioned that you had lost a lot of weight due to the surgery.. did they change your dosage according to your new weight? Becase you could be taking too much and it could be overwhelming your body.
If that is true, you should probably either go down a dose level or switch medications. Consult your docotor before doing any of this of course.

Your body also is in overtime with healing, and in some people this can cause large amounts of fatigue and distress.

Anyways, I hope that you'll be okay.
Good luck and be sure to do what your body tells you. It knows best.

ps. medications can cause dehydration.

what type of surgery did you have and how recent?? was it gastric bypass?? loose stools is VERY common with the surgery. I would think more of your sugar being LOW if you got dizzy, could have also been orthostatic hypotension from being in a lying position for so long. If you are several months out from your surgery, go in and have your blood tested for anemia and your B12 levels.
Call you regular doctor or surgeon and ask if you need to come in. I suggest you make a appointment and go in despite what they say.
