I'm looking to hire a caregiver for my father who suffered a stroke.?!

Question: I'm trying to find a site where caregivers post and that I can contact them directly without going through an agency. Does any one know of a site like this? I posted an ad on craigslist already but am hoping to find other ways in case no one responds. Thanks so much in advance.

First of all, I don't know of any such site that meets your needs. However, I, myself would not be comfortable hiring someone without some sort of certification in the health field. My recommendations would be to check with your local hospitals because they do usually have a list of either certified nursing aids or experienced individuals that are available for private hire. Also, check with your local social service agency or home health agency for their list. Make sure you check out their references as well as asking for letters of recommendations. Remember to include your father in the interview of the possible caregivers. It is important for him to be able to develop a trusting relationship with someone that is going to provide on-going care for him in his home. Please, remember that you both are involved in this decision making and approval of the individual's hiring must be mutual for both.

I know of no site. I would suggest just asking people. Try the nurses at the hospital--through your doctor's office nurses--if you have in-home nurses--ask them if they know so someone. Ask your local pharmacist. There doesn't seem to be many in this field of work. Good luck to you.

Didn't the hospital where your Dad was treated set up a Visiting Nurse to evaluate him ?? Visiting Nurse's will also set up home Physical Therapy, Speech Therapy, and Occupational Therapy ( they will help him with bathing, show him ways to dress himself etc. ). How severe was your Dad's Stroke ?? Is he able to talk, any significant paralysis, problems with his speech, swallowing difficulties ?? It is best the you do go through the VNA ( Visiting Nurse Association) so that it can be determined as to what your Dad needs for care. I don't think that is wise to try to find a caregiver that doesn't have the knowledge, experience or, skill to determine what your Dad's needs are. At least have the VNA evaluate him and take it from there. In addition, they can show you ways to provide some care for him as well. Since I don't know the severity of your Dad's stroke, this is the best choice for him. I hope that this is helpful.
