It's called a myoclonic jerk. Sometimes when you are falling asleep, your brain interprets this as the body dying, and it sends little shocks to wake it up.

Yes this has happened to me but don't know why it happens I'm afraid. I just ignore it. It's happened whilst I've been driving too. Doesn't happen all the time.
