I am very worried... I just inhaled ammonia...?!

Question: Okay I was cleaning my jewelry and I have never used ammonia before and I always heard it had a bad smell but I couldn't smell anything... So I bent over the counter an dput my nose right up to the cup it was all in and it BURNED my nose... I asked my mom and she said I would be fine.. it would just clear my sinuses for a while but I want to know if thats the truth. So my question is... What can happen if you take a whiff of ammonia??

How are you feeling? Any dizziness, headaches etc?
If you have any symptoms like that, you should call poison control or your local doctor.

If no symptoms, and you just got a whiff of it, then no need to worry.

PS - if you ever suspect a funny chemical smell, then you should never stick your nose into it. You should hold the item some distance from you and fan the air above the item towards you with your hand. (old chemist trick!)

dumb* not dun Report It

  • You should call Poison Control and see what they have to say. They are the first and foremost resource for this type of thing.

nothing seriously bad. you probably felt light headed right? its because of the fumes. doing this one time wont have any major effects but constant inhilation of ammonia isnt good

One whiff may be annoying, but it won't do any lasting damage.

if you start getting sick you should go to the hospital

Your lungs are designed to only exchange 15% of your oxygen capacity with a deep breath. One whiff is no problem but keep doing it and it is.
