Smoking....Why does it continue for the younger crowd?!

Question: I am 47, and my parents both smoked. My mother died after smoking 3 packs of Camels per day, and she was only 42! Now, if you look at all the young people, girl and boys, black and white, and rich and poor, you see smoking still after all the things that we all know happen when you smoke! The other side is when you look at how exspensive smoking is now, how are these young, some from very poor families afford to smoke anyway? What are your thoughts..Parents, and kids out there that smoke, your thoughts are welcome!

I suppose we could "find fault" (and be justified to a point) with all of the "celebrities" and "media stars" who smoke. But....I believe it's MAINLY due to the very POOR example of the OLDER crowd! We get all bent outta shape about our "out of control youth" these days, and adults have the NERVE to preach to kids to "Just say no!" to drugs while THEY (the adults) are SUCKING DOWN THEIR BUD-LITE AND KOOL 100'S!!!

You can't have it both ways! This "do as I say, not as I do" attitude on the part of so many PARENTS is nothing but HYPOCRISY!!! And kids see right thru that! Like is or not, nicotine is A DRUG, just as ALCOHOL is! It's just that the "adults" think that THOSE things are "OK" because they're LEGAL! But that doesn't make it RIGHT!

The reason for "bad kids" is BAD PARENTS! It's time for DAD & MOM to "just say no" to THEIR OWN "bad habits".....like smoking and tobacco in ALL forms!!! Give up the cigarettes, cigars, pipes, and CHEWING TOBACCO AND SNUFF!!! Hey folks! Guess what? The "Marlboro Man" DIED FROM LUNG CANCER! I gave that NASTY FILTHY habit up on my 17th birthday (30 years ago) and have NEVER regretted it! Back then, it was 55 cents a pack! Man! What a LONG time ago THAT was!!! I know I've saved A LOT of money, as well as "wear and tear" on my body!

I'm so sorry to hear about your dear mother! I know it must hurt real bad, ESPECIALLY since her premature death was PREVENTABLE!!! I guess it's just man's stupid and sinful nature that keeps us "going back for more" to what we KNOW is destructive! What a shame! That's a HARD lesson to learn! And rightly did Solomon state that "the way of transgressors is HARD." Yes, we DO "reap what WE sow."

My kids are younger (oldest is 9) and they complain to me all the time to stop smoking. I think the teens of today just missed the generation that will stop smoking. They still seem to think that it is cool.

Some young people don't care enough about themselves, others or the environment. I think it should be drummed in more and I don't think irresponsible people should buy for some not yet older enough to buy there own. Only my opinion.

Tobaccao lobbyists are evil people. They market smoking as "cool". They try to get people when they are young so they are hooked for a long time.

I am 22, and have smoked a total of one pack of cigarettes in my lifetime. It didn't catch on for me, and the risks were not worth continuing to smoke. I also lost my grandmother recently to lung cancer, and wouldn't think of touching a cigarette again.

I am not exactly sure why smoking continues for the younger crowd. Some may thing that smoking is "cool." Others may experience weight loss, and feel that the "benefits" they see on the outside are worth risking the effects that smoking has on the inside of the body. Some may feel stressed and see smoking as their only way to de-stress. And there are those who may now realize the harmful effects, but feel too addicted to try and quit, so they continue. Whatever the reason, I would hope that those who do eventually try to quit smoking are successful in their attempts.

Best wishes and take care!

actually, i think the percentage of smokers have gone down especially in the younger generation. yeah, some kids still do it. i've seen lung cancer but it was the non-smoker type. but, it still doesn't stop me form smoking. i am a non-smoker. my family wouldn't be too happy with me smoking cigs. frankly, i don't have the money to afford this addiction. i actually like the smell of cigs too which might be strange for a non-smoker. but, lung cancer doesn't scare me. the thought of losing those who i care about to it does scare me. as for myself, i'm not scared of death. i'm scared of losing. i'm ranting. but, those are my thoughts.

I have never smoked!!

I grew up around everyone who did - I lived my childhood in a cloud of it at all times!!!

I think it is gross and will never understand why people do it!! I have never thought it was cool and never will.

My 12 year old daughter thinks it is gross too!! I hope she never changes her mind. She knows I will kick her ***!!!

I don't smoke. I think it's so gross! I know what you mean though. A lot of my friends started when we were 14 and they thought they were 'cool' by smoking and I guess now they're addicted. I tried it when I was 12 or 13. My father smokes too.

It's such a waste of money, I don't get it either.
