Kidney Over-time?!

Question: Can you over work your kidneys? At work I drink bottle after bottle of water. Once I go to the bathroom I keep downing the water. Will that harm or over work my kidneys? Should I slow down and keep it to the recommended 6 bottles a day? Or should I feel free to gulp as much as I want?

Your kidneys act like a filter, not a machine - so you will just filter out the water you don't need in your system. I don't think you can "overwork" your kidneys given that reason.

On the other hand, there are people who are compulsive water drinkers (the condition is called psychogenic polydipsia) who drink so much water that they end up having dangerously low levels of sodium in their body. Just another example that too much of anything is not good. Just FYI.

Your kidneys can't really be over worked by water due to the fact that the purpose of the kidneys is to remove the harmful things your drink in the liquid. Your body uses enough water that, with your muscles and brain water will not over work your kidneys, and I don't believe any other drink will either.(you'd probably die of something else first) You can die from drinking to much water because it causes your brain to swell.

Plenty of water is good for your kidneys and helps to eliminate toxins from your body but unfortunately if you overdo it and get too carried away and drink water like a fish you are likely to eliminate some of the good nutrients from your body as well such as some of the minerals.
