When somthing makes you jump, why do we gasp?!

Question: Because at that moment you are acting instinctively, which means you are in "fight or flight" mode. Whether you fight or run away, you will need to enrich your lungs with oxygen to do so well, which is why you gasp.

Shockness? Lol, thats a good question

cuz we're scardeycats

incase we are falling into water, and its a pretty loud sound so alerts others around us to out peril

Human nature...

cause it prepares you for battle and gets more oxygen into your system

fight or flight response
its our human instinct

Not all of us do. But I'm sure it's related to the "fight or flight" instinct.

human nature makes us afraid of things that could hurt us. so id say human instinct.

i'm gonna guess that it's an attempt to rush oxygen to the brain after the shock

adrenline leaks? guessing here

So if we need to, we can scream for help, or, if we fall into water, we have air to live off of.

actually, this is your body taking an influx of oxygen to fuel your system for battle with unkown threat. same reason people huff when their mad

I just go into batter mode. geroffme!

It could be a shock responce that simply gains attention.

Maybe it's just to make sure we get one last short breath before we die.

I personally feel that we gasp to properly supply oxygen to our bodies for our fight or flight response...gotta have the right mix to survive!

Being startled triggers a set neurological response. You breathe in because if you had to freeze it would be better to have full lungs and if you had to run/fight, a gasp is the first part of hyperventilation which provides the necessary oxygen for extra energy. That gasp is an evolutionary advantage mediated by the medulla.

It's called the startle reflex.

b/c of the mere shock and impression

its the shock that makes you gasp

i have no idea but my bloke jumped out at me today and scared the c**p outa me, and i did a lot more than gasp i can tell you, most of it involved very bad words and involuntary hand thrusts in his direction!!!!!!!!!! lol

Fight or Flight response, and we gasp to take in air, ready to react to the situation.
