How can I get my husband to quit smoking?!

Question: My husband has been a smoker for 18 years, since he was 15. We married almost 2 years ago and we conceived our son in August of 2006. I had been trying to get him to quit smoking for the longest time as I know all too well the damage it does as my father has emphysema. When I told him we were pregnant I asked him to quit smoking by the time our baby was born which was in April this year as I didn't want our child exposed to it. When I went into hospital 3 1/2 months before our bub was born for the rest of the pregnancy due to complications he started smoking in the house because I wasn't around and our other children were being looked after by their grandparents so he could continue to work. I started asking him frequently when he was going to quit as the time for me to bring our baby home was drawing close. He would say soon and change the subject. I came home from the hospital and he continued to smoke and I wouldn't let him near our son until he showered and changed clothes.

Nagging at him to quit is not going to help. Neither will cutting off sex, getting angry, making him go outside, not letting him near the baby. The only thing that will make him want to quit is that he wants to quit. Even the best quit smoking aids will not work unless he wants to quit. You can set rules such as no smoking in the house or garage. No smoking in the car. The more you rag on him the more he is going to get his back up. If you quit going on at him or only bring it up once in awhile you will have better luck. You really want to get him have the kids talk to him not all the time just every once in awhile. Of course, if they are discussing not smoking in school it would be the perfect time for them to talk to Dad about his smoking. Quitting is very hard and if you really don't want to quit it is nearly impossible.

Man that's an easy one! Stop putting out, hahah.

cut off sex, and give him the patch/gum.

Have him talk to his doctor about the new drug Chantix. It has worked for my husband and I both...he has to want to quit though..

he has to be ready to quit. it is very hard to quit. if he is going to continue he needs to do it outside and not in the house!! you could have him go to adr. who will prescribe a pill for him to take to help control the urge to smoke. wellbutrin is what i used!! the problem is though is that he has to be ready to do this or it wont work!! i sure wish you both the best. its a terrible habit to try to kick!!

cut his hands off and sew his lips together.should work and i give a 100% gurantee on that.

you cant make him, he has to want to. Not only that but in all fairness, wether you like it or not you knew before you married him he smoked. I say as long as he smokes outside and washes his hands real good before handling the baby then just support him by sugesting he try chantix ( new stop smoking drug with awesome results)

I would buy him a belated christmas present " Stop Smoking Now" audio CD. It is highly effective and he can listen to as many times as he likes!

hi
unless he wants to give up for himself it is a waste of time nagging him try this have a smoke free house and tell him every time he wants a cig he has to go outside hope it works good luck with everything
