tears are a protective mechanism, they can be triggered by several things, not just emotional upset. There are glands around the eyes that produce tears, the tears serve to lubricate the eyes, and to wash them as well.

its a way to clean your eyes and stop them from drying but i cry when i am upset or stressed as it is a coping mechanism for trauma or upset in my life.
i burst into tears when a family member is upset because i love them and care and i cry when one of the people i care about is hurt or in danger.
