Probably is the plastic i cant stand them myself. I found some at my local wal-mart that are similar to those soft ear plugs you get at stadium events. I can use them for hours without pain. Plus the music doesn't have to be as loud because it blocks out all other noise. They were about 20 bucks. Great deal.
it is not good for your ears to use cotton buds in your ears as they can push the wax down further into your ear and damage it.
they can damage your ear drum and the cotton part can also come off the plastic and get stuck down there.
so my advice - DON'T USE THEM AT ALL!
