What does this mean? Having trouble getting numb for surgery, at dentist, etc.?!

Question: Last yr was the 1st time this happened, but it's happened 4x since then.

The 1st was for outpatient toe surgery. The dr injected local anesthesia into what she said was the main nerve for my toe. After 20 mins I was not numb, but she insisted I was and started. I was screaming in pain. Turns out the 1 side of my toe was numb, but the other wasn't, which happened to be the 1 that was getting the procedure. Dr said I have an 'anomole' nerve.

Then, I had a major filling done. Same scenario. No matter how long the dentist waited, I was not numb. Unfortunately he also didn't believe me, and started, and when I screamed he gave me more injections.

I changed dentists, and had the SAME thing happen again.

Last week (this makes me shiver) I had a ROOT CANAL without getting numb, and again was screaming/crying in pain. I even told the dentist the whole story beforehand, but she just waited longer for it to kick in, when in fact I needed more shots.

I have the exact same problem. When I had to have toe surgery (on both toes) they would not go numb after the injections. It turned out I had to have 7 injections in each toe all over to get it to deaden some and even then I could feel it slightly. Sometimes your nerves adapt to the serum given, they become immune to things, and thus when a doctor tries to do it again it takes much more. Your immune system simply can cope with the invading agent better and better the more it is used. For my dental work, I've never had a cavity or anything because I know I would have to have tons of shots and I can't handle it. I've had braces put in, spacers, etc, and when I had it done I had a light dose of gas before they did it because it was much more effective. I made sure my dentist understood me when I told him I was not numb.

If a doctor doesn't believe you DO NOT let them continue. You are paying them for a service and if they're not doing things right, then let them know.

This happens to me too - its b/c you are so nervous your body works against the numbing meds. If you go to a dentist and they don't give you more shots - walk out - don't be intimidated. This is your body.

some people just have a naturally occuring higher tollkenence than others. i had the same problem with my dentist and i MADE him give me another shot . don't let anyone in heathcare tel you how you feel.

p.s. ive also heard that red heads have a higher tolerance to anasia than any one else. wierd right?

Look after ur teeth better & if u need dental work get put 2 sleep.

WOW!
You've got a real high tolerance to stuff like Novocain.
I think the only thing that can be done in your case is to skip the local anesthesia and get completely knocked out for any kind of medical procedure. Just be sure to have somebody with you that you can trust at all times. No driving.
Oh, and did I forget to mention... WOW!
