Well assuming you're not the alcoholic author Bukowski, your liver will recover and function reasonably well within a few days. Most people can drink too much once in a while without doing permanent damage to their livers (however there are always exceptions so don't assume you can drink the same as others as it may not be true)
As you seem to know, it's not good to drink too much - but doing it once in a while probably won't kill you (the hangover may just make you wish it had!)
