Hi!
It is ok to be scared. I give people IVs all the time, and to most people they are more scared of that than the surgery they are about to have. I just want to reassure you that you will be surrounded by so many people that are there to keep you safe and comfortable when you have your surgeries. Anesthesia (going to sleep for surgery) has gotten so much safer over the years, and serious problems because of anesthesia are rare. Sometimes people just react a little differently to the medicines used and take a little longer to be fully awake. During the time they are waking up and getting back to normal, they are under the watchful care of nurses and doctors to make sure they are ok, even if they don't realize it.
So, the IV.
Ask if they can take you to the operating room before putting the IV in. In the operating room, the person who will do your anesthesia can give you laughing gas before they start the IV to make you not care so much and take the pain away with the IV. If you are nervous at the hospital before this, they can give you a pill or some liquid by mouth to make you more relaxed. You will do just fine. Deep breaths...they help!

I am scared of shots too. But think on the bride side... you won't have to do the same exact surgeries the next time... I feel bad for you... and you must remember that surgeries are going to be done for a reason... to protect your body you shouldn't be scared of helping your body.

Think of it this way; would you rather have the surgery without the shot? the shot will feel gooooood, trust me, it is just pressure. I broke my wrist last February and to realign it the doc gave me a huuuuge syringe full of local anesthetic, and it felt soooooo gooood when he pushed the plunger.

I still haven't come over my fear of needles yet and I'm an adult!
But the key is: usually IV needles don't hurt as much as you would think, it's those hypodermic syringes that hurt the most.

jack off

one surgery i had they gave me a shot in my hand to numb it so i wouldn't feel the IV go in--worked great---ask if they can do this---i don't mind shots but hate IVs with a passion--i've had several surgeries and don't mind the surgery a bit---gives me great rest time

I don't like shots, but the benefit of them defintely outweighs the slight pain you receive from them. I'd rather get the flu shot than have the flu, for example. I had surgery last April on my nose, and I had to be put to sleep. I was scared too, but the procedure doesn't hurt and is painless. How I calmed my fears were by saying the Serenity Prayer that is used in my Emotions Anonymous group. It goes like this-God grant me the serenity to accept the things I can not change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference. That helped me. You can also explain your fears to your medical personnel, and they should be able to alleviate your concerns. In case you're interested, the term for sleep medicine is anesthesia.

Good luck on your surgery! I'm having skin cancer surgery in two weeks. I'm scared, but I have a positive attitude that everything will be fine.
