Polystyrene Beads in Pillow?!

Question: Is this harmful substance because I have a pillow which is filled with it and it gives off a certain odor which smells similiar to spray or metallic paint

They have been used here for years for dog bedding etc, and I havent heard of any bad chemicals etc, but the smell would worry me, can you wash the entire pillow and see if it improves? I know I used the wash the dogs bed in the washing machine and it came out fine.
