During the day we are moving around and tend to be more upright. All the activity tends to help the mucous go down easier and be thinner as well. At night we aren't moving about as much, nor stay upright as much. The result is that you have thicker mucous and it's not able to drain as easily. It's the normal pattern of things. Plus by evening, you are tired and less amused by the whole cold business when all you want to do is relax or sleep. Just try cooling off the room temperature a bit and take a cold medicine for nighttime use. You will feel better, sleep better and get better faster.
