it's a basic first assessment. if they're not breathing, you have to start helping them breathe right away. if there is no pulse, you have to start chest compressions. getting them onto the ambulance takes time. you need to know if the person needs immediate intervention or not while you're working on getting everything ready for them to get on the ambulance.

Grab a friend and palpate a pulse.
Grab a friend and jump in the back of a van speeding towards the hospital, and palpate a pulse.

Which takes longer? Hmm...

so we can kno how much air they need to get on the way to the hospital

"Grab a friend and palpate a pulse.
Grab a friend and jump in a car and speed down the road, and palpate a pulse.

Which takes longer?"

yea, what he said!

It is important to check the pulse rate, respiratory and b/p from time to time coz they are called VITAL SIGNS.And when you say vital signs it is literally means that they are the important function of the body like the heart, lungs etc etc.So from the vital signs records of the patient/victim you will rely whether the patient is still in good or bad condition..coz if you will not perform the vital signs immediately even the doctor will be clueless or worse will totally screwed the medics...

Its required...... the paramedics can perform advanced proceedures that include..... management of the patients airway, administration of drugs, interpretting and treating cardiac irregularities....... by assesing the patient at the scene the patient can be given the same treatments they would recieve at the hospital....but much sooner

They do a lot more than just drive you to the hospital
