Why does the pharmacy assistant have to tell the pharmacist what I'm buying?!

Question: I bought some Ibuprofen Friday night and she called out "Ibuprofen" to the pharmacist before she scanned the item and took my money. Why do they do this? It happens each time I or another customer buys something over the counter. It could be "Anadin", "Hypromellose" eyedrops, etc.

I once worked in a chemists shop and we had to tell the pharmacist if we sold anything with a caution on it ie anything that could be dangerous if you take too many. Since we now live in a nanny state almost everything has such a caution.

seems odd to me

It is a powerful drug and legally the assistant has to ask the pharmacist if she can sell it to you. I take it that you have no intention of committing suicide, but allot of people do with Ibuprofen and paracetamol. Hope this clears it up for you. Philip.

even condoms?

I can see why they do it with ibupofen because its a powerful adictive drug which the a good choice for people who want to kill them self so they are just letting the pharmacist know they are selling it. But i dont see why they tell them about anadin
