If you're 12 and you're cutting yourself, things can only go downhill from there. You need a psychiatrist and years of pricey analysis.

But---collections are important emotionally---collecting and sorting stuff (small things, like books, stamps, beanie babies, icebox magnets, etc.) give you a sense of power. You may not be able to control your world at 12, but you can darned well control those stamps--they stay where you put them, in the order you want. Stamps are also very educational, little tiny pieces of propaganda, little visual masterpieces, and fun to examine. It's also very cheap to do----get envelopes from old mail, xmas cards, the trashcan at the post office, tear off the stamps, soak them about 5 minutes in warm water, slide them off the paper backing, and let dry face-down on sheets of aluminum foil----voila! A stamp collection.
Stamps also don't take much space, so they are easy to store in a box, or in a proper stamp album.

i think he meant get a hobby to take your mind off of stuff.

It will take your mind off cutting and hurting yourself. It's like a harmless way to stop the habit.

Depends on the emo problem. In this case, it is pretty hard to cut yourself on round coins. Stamps rarely cause paper cuts. So there you go.
