Colonoscopy?!
Question: Anyone ever had a colonoscopy done? I am having it done next week and was wondering what to expect. Do I need to take the day off before the procedure due to running to the bathroom all day?

I guess all Drs. do it mostly the same with a few variations. The day before you will have a laxative that you must drink throughout the morning hours. Then you will run to the bathroom most of the day. The next day they will sedate you and you may or may not sleep. Some people feel a little cramping but that is usually after the procedure. You pretty much don't care what they are doing during the procedure if they have sedated you enough. They will remove any polyps you may have in your colon and may bleed a little if they have to remove polyps. I would take the day before the procedure off unless you can run to the bathroom anytime you need. It starts out like diarrhea but gets better as the day goes on. Good luck. The day before, you usually don't start going to the bathroom until about an hour after taking the cleanser.
They do sedate you, some people sleep and some stay awake. I stay awake. It is painful like a deep cramp, but the whole proceedure lasts about 5 minutes.
The sedative usually puts me out of commission for two days after.
ive had one done. they give u a water bag called an anema(sp?) and u have to flush yourself out.it fills your rectum with water and you have to go to the toilet to flush it out.( i was in a hosptial so the nurses aid had this great task) you have to do it like at 5am. you can take the day off but you should do the laxatives maybe 2 hrs bf u go to sleep bc u cant eat after. your system has to b completely clean bf they do the colonscopy. they will usually put you to sleep to perform the procedure and after ward you will have gas. you will prob still be knocked out to even realize you have gas.
my friend had a colonoscopy done.the give you laxative to clean out your colon ,the laxative is disgusting .what they do is give you IV or intervention,it's a needle that comes from this bag that they hang up next to you.The IV calms you down.Then you are told to Lay on your side.Then they stick a camera attached to wire up your anus and they check to see if anything is forming in your colon such as colon cancer,hernia etc.this process is painful and discomfort .it is worst than getting gas in your colon.don't be afraid just tell the doctor if the pain is to much to bare
I've had this procedure three times. If your test is scheduled for the morning, you will begin to take the laxative the evening before. You will take a second dose four hours before the procedure. You can work the day before, because you don't begin the cleansing until the evening.
One suggestion...I begin to eat more lightly at least three days before the test. There is less to pass. The day before, you will need to eat soft foods like yogurt, ice cream, and creamy soups.
You will be given an IV with a mixture of Versed and Demoral, a delightful cocktail. You will then be under conscious sedation. You will have little to no recollection of the procedure. The prep is worse than the scope.
