Another cause of backed up Emergency Rooms?!

Question: My daughter was in a dodge-ball accident at school, when I went to pick her up she couldn't walk on one foot and it was swelling pretty good. After a call to the advice nurse, I tried to get her in that afternoon to see our Dr. but he was booked up and it would be a week before I could get an appointment. So, I called our insurance to find out where our nearest urgent care provider was. There wasn't one in our area, their nurse told me to take her to the emergency room because her foot might be broken. Two X-Rays and four hours later we got to go home. She torn her ligaments but nothing was broken.

Has anyone else been in this position? Having to use the emergency room because you couldn't get in to see your normal Dr? oh BTW - the hospital bill was $1413.00. $950 of which was for the two X-Rays. These were the negotiated fees. We will be paying it all since our deductible is 1,500.00. Much rather would have taken her to our Doctor.

Yes, I have been there. In fact, when you call most dr's offices, their outgoing messages instruct you to go to emergency, if you need immediate medical attention.

Try finding another doctor next time.

Yes. I absolutely hate going to hospitals/ emergency rooms. They don't even treat you like you're in an emergency. They make you wait for hours and hours ,even though there are no other patients there!!!!!!!!!! And yes just because it's an "emergency " room or some type of urgent care ,they charge you a lot more money for the same type of care

I understand the overcrowded emer room thing. Where I live a man had chest pains. He got put at the bottom of the list and died in the waiting room.

I hate insurance. We pay so much just to be insured but when a real emergency comes up they do nothing for us!

wow that sucks well thats what u get when go to a popular doc

yes and the claim was illegals or so on, now that the law has came wonder what is left to say.

no?

my grandfather waited in the er for 15 hours because he hadnt been able to go to the bathroom for 6 days. they didnt think that was important. he's 89. he left because he was tired of waiting. my mom had to drive from virginia to ny to bring him BACK to the er the following day and waited another 10 hours. the er nurses never knew that he even left and thought he was still on the waiting list.

thats something that could have killed him because of the toxins not being flushed out of his system.

people go to the er because they dont have insurance, and therefor dont have a DR. but even the DR's offices are begining to be like that. a co-worker had an infection and was told it would be 2 weeks before she could be seen and had to go to urgent care to get it drainned and get meds. thats scarey.

Try an AM/PM clinic. These are typically cheaper than emergency room and usually only cost you a copay.

$950.00 for 2 X-rays? Wow!

You too should be in favor of socialized medicine!

I haven't been in that position as a parent but has a kid yes. In 5th grade I was in gym and we were doing our gymnastics unit like we do every year. I was never good at anything in gym class because i am a little overweight and I wasn't very athletic. I got really good at kick-up handstands and loved to do them wherever. On one gym day the teacher put us into groups of three and sent us to stations my first station was kick-up hand stands and I was so excited I went first and nailed it on my second turn I stayed up for a really long time b/c the goal was to stay up as long as possible. I was still up there and my friend said wow you're doing great. I stayed up for about 20 seconds longer when all of a sudden I dislocated my left shoulder I fell to the ground and landed on it so I popped it back in. My friends said what was that? I said I don't know and started crying. I went over to my gym teacher and told her what happened and then she told me to sit on the mats. I went over and sat on them. I started crying hysterically. The nicer gym teacher asked me what happened so I told him what happened and he sent me to the nurse. The nurse sent me home and told me to go to my doctor. I went to my doctor and we waited about 45 minutes and I was in such pain. Then he took us in and said there's nothing I can do take her to the E.R. That costs us $20 sitting for 45 minutes and saying that. So we went to the E.R. and I had to wait about 3 hours then they gave me a sling and told me I had to wear it for three days. The best part, the mean gym teacher greeted me when I came into school and started crying because she thought it was her fault! It was so funny I was laughing so hard!

Yeah, I've been in this position. About 2 yrs ago I got really sick with what I thought was pneumonia and was running a temp of 104.1. I went to the urgent care place, waited for 2 hrs to see a doctor only to be told I'd have to go to the ER anyways because they didn't do x-rays at the doctor's office and the imaging center was closed on weekends.
