Wow wonder what the qualifications are of previous answerer? She is way off base. Anyways, first of all in the U.S. most insurance companies pay for the implant and surgery. If you insurance does not cover it it would set you back about $10,000. The implant is extremely successful especially in people who lost their hearing later in life. Now the only way you are going to find out if you are a candidate is to undergo the testing. Talk to the doctor and the audiologist about your concerns - they are the ones who deal with patients everyday who get implants they are the experts.

That said the implant sometimes works wonderfully right off the bat and sometimes it takes several months for you to get used to it. I am an audiologist and while in school I was in a clinic that worked with adult implant patients. It really is an amazing device with much success for many people. It has improved the quality of life for many many people with severe hearing loss. If you are 32 years old you have a lot of life to live you owe it to yourself to look into this option.

They are not very successful, in the UK there are only 200-250 operations (NHS) carried out to fit an implant per year.

A reason for the lack of the success is the series of pre operative tests can not be 100% accurate.

If your ear area is knocked at all the implant can move just slightly and becomes ineffective, so its a risk of having somewhere so close to your brain cut open for something that doesnt grant success in most cases, it too high and thats why doctor dont like to refer or pass on cases.
