If I've had water in a vase with a flower, is it safe to drink?!

Question: The water's only a week old at this point and there's very little. It's just a shot glass filled with water and a flower. My co-worker and I made a bet that the first person to make $1000 in one day has to drink it. Will I get sick when I do this?

Gotta love bets. Well, actually, it depends on what kind of flower it is. As long as it is not a poisonous flower, or a herb of some kind, i'd say it will probably be all right. Won't taste good, though.

If you are really worried, i'd look up the particular kind of flower in wikipedia (www.wikipedia.org, an online encyclopedia), to check for any poisonous or hazardous chemicals or enzymes that could be in the flower. If there are definitely none, then you needn't be too worried, although I do recommend you seal the glass off with foil or tinfoil, to prevent any possible contamination with bacteria or some kind of virus, although this is very unlikely.

If you leave the glass of water for a truly prolonged period of time, and the flower is starting to rot or the water is looking AT ALL murky, or you see quite a lot of larger particles floating around within the water, or if there is any kind of thin layer on top of the water, like slime or something, DONT DRINK IT. But as long as the flower is not hazardous, the water looks normal and no one you don't trust could have had access to the glass, i'd say go ahead and have fun. A bet's a bet, and it will probably just feel a little weird. You can handle it.

Our ancestors drank water from all kinds of sources, even mud pools, with more dirt in it than water, and they could handle it (as long as there were no dead animals in it or anything.) In fact, there's this lake near where I live, and when I run around it with my dog, I often enjoy half a litre or so on my pause. Tastes quite good, actually.

Good luck with the bet,

Bacteria can multiply very quickly in water, especially when it is standing still, and could also pick up any bacteria from the flower itself.

Smell the water it should smell gross, it has all kinds of garbage in it I would think you could get sick.. if nothing else you would throw up.

how did you make $1000 dollars in a day ?

who would actually do it. i wouldn't

One week is long enough to have bacteria grow in the water and can make you sick. Use the $1000 to buy a nice fresh bottle of water or a drink for your friend. lol

Or, at least you have money to pay for your medical bills if you were to get sick. lol

No, really, if you drink it that's a chance but maybe next time bet on something less harmful or gross. lol

You wont get too sick. It probably will taste nasty and might give you a bit of a tummy upset... but it won't cause any lasting effects!!

Aside from being REALLY nasty...I think that the germs just from the water sitting there that long might not be smart to ingest.
Think pond scum...
There are so many things floating around in the air that are now growing on that water...I get nauseous just thinking about it.
