Serious bad habit! What should I do?!

Question: I have this really bad habit of taking a LOT of strong muscle relaxers when I'm not in pain: I take them when I can't sleep and I take them when I'm upset and I've done this for two years. Are there any facts that might scare me out of it, or can anyone give me advice on what to do? Thanks.

as a recovering addict I will tell you in brief, get off the drugs and your bodies natural stimulant and depresant systems will eventually normalize. This does take some time. The time varies based on drug type, the amount your taking and length of usage. It took me almost a year to normalize but my drug use was to the extreme (heroine, 6 years and methadone another 2 years).

This is how it works. The brain has cells that release chemicals like ceratonine, dopamine and endorphines and cells that recieve these chemicals, these chemicals stimulate the cntral nervous system. when you add a synthetic chemical into the system the receptor cells are overflooded which stimulates the body more than normal. However, after continued use the releasing cells shut down because the body no longer needs them and the receptor cells become more plentiful to compensate for the surplus. Therefore, when you stop you have all these receptor cells starving and the release cells are no loger working, this results in withdraw. The brain will quickly try to adapt within a few days but takes months to fully heal. Post detox problems are mostly depresion and lack of sleep. You may also experience the inability to get excited about things that normal people do, such as going to a party or getting a pay raise.

Another effect is temporary brain damage, the frontal lobe which gives judgement abilities lessens in activity which allows the latter part control over behavior that would normally be against your better judgement. Example] Normal response: I want to drive home even though I'm intoxicated but I better not. Addicted brain: I know I shouldn't drive but what the hell I'm going to anyways. This leads to harder drug use or in recovery relapse.

Scared now.

What to do: just stop cold turkey and you should feel better in a couple of days, muscle relaxers are nothing compared to what I was taking. If you don't stop I can almost guarentee you that you will wind up on harder drugs. Nobody ever gets up one day and decides to stick a needle in their arm. Sorry about my spelling, my spell check isn't working.
