Well if your lymphs in your neck are swollen, then it is probably a bacterial or viral infection. Get some Echinacea at your grocery store, take that for a few days and you should be good. If it doesnt improve, go to the doc.

You can still get strep throat without your tonsils! Do you have a fever? Chills? Hard to swallow? Any white spots on the back of your throat? Take some Ibuprofen tonight, gargle with warm salt water and get to bed. Tomorrow, get into see the Doctor...or you'll be sick all week-end! Take it easy. Good luck! KJL

No tonsils just means it can't be tonsillitis. You still have a throat, and it can still get sore. Sore throats are usually dry throats, sometimes irritated by coughs. You may not be aware of the congestion or drainage during the day. Since you are upright, you would drain easily enough without a problem. But at night, when you lie down, that is not the case. If you are stuffy at all, or have nasal drainage, you would tend to open your mouth in your sleep to breath. The upshot of that is it dries your throat out, and gives you a sore throat in the morning. For today I suggest you simply drink a lot of fluid, cold is usually best for soothing the tissues and reducing swelling/irritation, but some folks like tea with honey and/or lemon. The whole point is to replace fluids in the tissue. Add moisture to the air you breathe, with a vaporizor or a pot of water on the stove. And cool off the room you sleep in. Consider a medication to reduce drainage or congestion if you think that may be a nighttime problem. Basically, drink until your molars float. Avoid dairy, although it won't hurt you any, it coats the throat and makes you want to clear it. It can also aggrivate a cough and make mucous feel thicker. Otherwise, any liquid aside from alcohol and milk will do. In between, try sucking on hard candy to keep saliva flowing. You can also take Tylenol for the discomfort if you like- though I can't say I find it particularly useful to me for it. And if it's really miserable, they do make throat sprays with topical anesthetics that can help make it easier for a time. They don't act for that long, but can help to let you get started with drinking or even with eating. Mostly, it's just getting the throat moist again. If this doesn't help, you may still need to see a doctor. Even without tonsils, you can still get strep throat.

Just because you had tonsilectomy doesn't necessarily mean that you won't suffer from sore throat again! ^_^. There's also the possibility that it could be a viral infection that can cause blisters in there if your doctor ruled out mono or strep.

Are you having trouble speaking (Laryngitis) aside from your sore throat? I'm a singer and an actor, so sometimes after a strenuous string of concerts and plays, my throat gets sore for over exertion. Some people develop "cyst" or "nodules" in their larynx (think of it as some kind of pimple or scar tissue in your voice box), and that can be painful too, depending where its located.

Sometimes, if you're put in antibiotics for a long time, you can also develop an infection called "thrush" in your throat. It's sort of like a yeast infection... only its in your throat (and most of the time, also in your mouth).

If your throat remains sore for more than two weeks regardless of treatment, you should go back to your doctor and have it checked again.
