The most common cause is, as you drift off to sleep, your breathing slows and your body builds up excess carbon dioxide. This is the reason you yawn, but it can also cause muscle spasms. This is more likely to occur if you fall asleep in a position that is not conducive to good breathing. Try to avoid sleeping sitting up or laying flat on your back or stomach, rather, use a pillow to help you lay in a "three-quarter sideways" position, i.e., semi-supine or semi-prone.

One other possible cause is the vivid dreams that people sometimes have while half-awake. These can sometimes startle you awake and make you jerk, especially if you have the sensation of falling or being hurt.

yes and it happens sometimes to me..it wakes me up because it tends to happen right as im falling asleep..when it does it scares me...but its muscles

Happens to me, too. Its normal.

it's like a mini-seizure & feels like an electric shock ? Can happen 2 anyone on occasion. C Dr. if it happens alot.. It is also known 2 B an effect of drug withdrawal.

I also use to do the same thing, so I ask my doctor what or why am I doing this. He told me it is from nerves. This is caused by stress and makes the muscles tight when trying to relax. He help me by giving me a drug called quine sulfate. This really help me in sleeping.

my body does that 2 it's saying i'm trying 2 relax when i'm relaxed i'll stop jumping
