I just quit drinking alcohol.?!

Question: I'm 11 days sober. The weekdays have been easier then I expected, but the weekends have been much worse. I'm finding myself craving it badly. It's this god-awful urge that nearly pushes me into insanity. Is there anyone with tips on dealing with those urges?

You are AWESOME!!! 11 days!!! Good for you, man. Ya' know, you will always have those cravings. They will get less intense but they will be there. You just have to be stronger than the craving for about 5 min., it'll go away. You will always think of reasons to drink, having a bad day, having a bad minute, having a good day, it's fri night, it's Sat. afternoon, whatever. The other answers are right in that you have to find something else to occupy your body and mind. I know you probably think you can do it yourself but you can't. It may sound cliche but AA is the BEST way to go. Go to a meeting every damn day. Helping others is a good way to count your blessings and keep focused on whats most important. Volunteer your time on the weekends. You're gonna make it just fine!! Try not to backslide and if you do, keep trying, don't give up.

Start smoking?? Kidding!! Just take each day as it comes and if it gets really bad go 4 a walk every time and man you will get fit!!! Good on you!!

take long walks. make friends with other non drinking people that had the same problem. attend AA meetings. all will help.
Good luck. i will be praying for you. i was there once

Just know you are not alone. And if you are really ready and serious about quitting, it'll happen. Of course, you know about AA. Get your rear to a meeting. You know, a lot of the people there are crazier and funner than any drunk on a Saturday night. There must be a reason you want to quit, and congratulations by the way! You do need the support of other people, just don't hang by yourself and white knuckle it through another weekend. You're torturing yourself needlessly. Ps. If you aren't in a mind frame to think it's corny... try asking God for a little hand. Might actually surprise ya!

niacin completly takes away the cravings for alcohol. go to the pharmacy or grocery store and get just plain old niacin. the kind that gives you the niacin flush (it feels good you'll get all tingly and red, but you can drink water and it will go away). this will cure your ills. for now.

Find an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting in your area. Someone there will help you.

Make friends to talk to, use the buddy system. Find something else to do when you get the urge; take a walk, eat chocolate, start doing pushups, jogging, anything to keep you mind off of it. One thing that helped my dad was to get a dog, he would be your best buddy when you get the urge you two could take a walk or you could just talk to him. They are great listeners! And remember that you can do it as long as you keep your eye on the prize, you are stronger than the drink. Keep up the good work and I am glad to see that you are trying, and you will make it.

Exercise helps-go for a walk-chocolate helps too-it releases the same endorphins-hang in there it gets better in time

an idle mind is the devils playground! get busy and stay busy! surround yourself with others in recovery if you can,...take in one or two AA meetings on weekend days. you gotta pursue your recovery like you used to pursue the booze,........

nothing is wrong with having an occasional drink.. just KNOW YOUR LIMIT.. you dont want to harm yourself or others.. and only drink on the weekends..
