Smoking...........?!

Question: How did you give up

Did you give them up, focused

or did you have help

or did you cut down first

I'm interested how you achieved to be a ex smoker.

I gave up 10 years ago B - cold turkey! My husband however needed help and went on a programme at the doctor's surgery where he was monitored and prescribed with nicotine patches. He lapsed once but made it and has been 'clean' for a couple of years now. x

Ehm.. I sort of...didn't...

Well, unfortunately I smoke. My mum smoked 30 a day then 13 years ago gave up and hasn't smoked since.I would say this is willpower but a word won't encourage you to do it.Willpower comes from actually wanting to give up for whatever you're reasons are.The first 4 weeks are the worst,Some ex-smokers say to me after 20 yrs off them that they could still have one. It's mind over matter.

Hi, 3rd day of cold turkey, completed today. Just about hanging on to my sanity by my finger nails, lol.

i saw my mates smokin n having a nice tym. I tried it out, it gave me lots of problems, it hurts my chest like it's so tight, i couldn't sleep at night. the gas od the smoke made me cough alot. It's disgusting, i can taste the smoke, it's so werid. so after a week, i gave it up, its only a gas air ur breathing in n out..

i guess ppl r different

I stopped smoking on the 29th december 2007.
I aint going to say it was easy, because it was. I had flu.
couldn't eat, drink, smoke do anything. it beens 14 days now and i'm still in the infancy of giving up, i get hot sweats but at least i can walk into a shop and not think about asking for 20 b&h.
no other help..

the best way is to go see you're doc....if you really want to quit...then you have to agree to go on a programme...i think it's 10 wees...BUT you have to go each week....that way the doc supplies you with free patches all you do is stick to the programme and in 10 weeks you could pssibly be a none smoke nd there's meetings each week for the ones who are not handling it...they have someone there you can talk to if you are finding it hard....ask your doc, he/she will put you onto someone....and it's free....

I have no idea, I just stopped one day. I just knew that smoking began to make me feel a little sick, and I smelled real bad. It's so noticeable when you don't smoke, really off putting!
NEVER plan your last cigarette, don't think too much about giving up (if you can help it). Also, displace your urges by doing something else enjoyable. I play guitar because I enjoy it. However, if you try to learn something that takes too much concentration, it will make you more frustrated. Listen to your body, except for the cravings. Funnily enough I never got any, but I do have the odd smoke when I'm drinking/drunk.
Remember, it's different for everyone - it's a chemical thing, and everyone's body is individual.
Finally, know that you can do it, and you alone. The world can say what they like, but only you can do it, it is entirely your responsibility. I wish you the best of luck!! =oD

I used Alan Carr's book. Gave advise on how and when to stop. For me, best advise was, (friend whoever you were with), was enjoying evening, without smoking, so why shouldn't I!! I DON'T NEED A CRUTCH.

Year ago had heart attack scare.. was OK though decided to give up smoking. Had tried patches before. This time Doc prescribed Champix a new drug. Fot a week take a half dose and still smoke.. week 2 a full dose and stop smoking... It works by acting on receptors in the brain that make us smoke, It also reduces tobacco cravings and makes tobacco distasteful... You do need willpower as well though. The course is for 3 months I stopped taking them after 2 months ,,, Have not had a cigarette since nor really wanted one... It works for me. In UK it is on prescription only.

Never smoked Barb, dirty filthy habit!

just gave up went cold turkey.its the only way.takes alot of will power but i got tons of that, and more.try the patches and the rest a waste of money.best of luck.

Well, my fiance is quitting and he kind of just stopped cold feet. And yes it was hard, and he's still working on not putting one in his mouth because he's only been concentrating on quitting for about 2 months now..citrus stuff can help a lot..u might want to try eating oranges. And u just have to find something to substitute the smoking, that's all. Eat some sunflower seeds. Go for a walk, work out or something. And get some of that gum that have for smokers who r trying to quit. The simple stuff is much more cheaper than going to a doctor so that can get your money. That only comes if u just really can't do it and need much more help

yes , I smoke.
Good advice : START IT NEVER !

i had my first drag on thursday, and have had more and more drags each day, it bad i know, but i havent started somking properly yet.

I stopped buying matches. x

Help
Wife did not smoke so pressure to smoke was off
Friends knowing how badly I wanted to give up (most of my family have died of cancer) never had any cigarettes.

Worst times after the urgent need for tobacco had gone. in the bar whilst on a cheap cruise in the Med.

The day my son was born (about ten months after I packed in)
After that apart from an odd easily overcome "want" no problems. Never even thought of smoking again until the latest restrictions. However if someone lights up say at a party the smell is so offensive I need to know who it is then once I know they can smoke to their hearts content.
I bought my first car and learned to drive on the money I saved

Advice to those who are thinking of starting to smoke DON'T

Just wish I could give them up sparks but I'm to weak willed.
