Well, if talking about it like a business, hospitals have a monopoly in a way. Most of the time you don't really have a choice about where you go or who your doctor or nurse is. And you cant decide to boycott a hospital because you always need medical care. So really, they know that they can treat you like dirt and you still have to keep coming back. And then if you don't have good insurance they really get you because that limits a lot of your choices. Stress is also a factor, i think.

I don't think they are that mean

Yes you are right it is strees. But I guess most hsopitals and other businesses have strees management programs for their employees. I have no idea what other reason why they did that.

Receptionists & other desk type people do tend to be a bit gruff - but then again most people they deal with are having horrible days and some lash out at these people.

Nurses tend to be nicer, as do other staff that help patients in their rooms. But some patients need a firm hand, or need the nurse to be a bad guy to the visitors so the patient can get some rest. Doctors can be a bit gruff, but usually because they are late and wanted elsewhere.

Billing staff - have likely never met a smile in their careers. So it would be a bit much to expect happiness from them.

Also, it is easier to smile at someone who smiles. Keeping upbeat for the patient is a visitor's main job.

I feel that attitudes in any kind of business go from top down.
It is how the people are treated and how the business is approached.
I have two chronic conditions and I have been going to the hospital for treatment and test for 7 years.
I have had people be pretty mean and uncaring to me.
I have noticed during the last two years that they are changing things and attitudes.
They now send out surveys and ask how the treatment, service was. The staff have started treating people better and it is a nicer place to go. I have seen steady improvement during the last two years.
I was there again 3 days ago and even though I had some uncomfortable procedures, the nurses and staff were good to me. It made a big difference in the experience and made it more bearable.

Whether it is a car repair shop, retail furniture store, or a hospital.....it all depends on the attitude and treatment from the top down.

I am sorry that you have had such a bad experience with med professionals but I can assure you that this is not the case of all med professionals. Also, you have to understand how stressful the job of a doctor or a nurse. A stress experienced by having someone's life constantly be in your hands and a stress experienced by having a document prepared for a business meeting is not the same kind of stress. Doctors deal with a lot including worring about malpractice and its insurance, patient comfort and care, staying up to date on the current technologies, research, teaching med school students, handling multiple patients at a time and much more. What's more is that most doctors work 14 hr shifts or more/ day and depending on what specialty, have to be on call 24 hrs a day! If they actually treated patients like dirt, I don't think that they would care for patiens or make them better. Maybe the doctor you were seeing wasn't so nice to you and that's horrible, but I think that you should be a little more open minded before you judge ever medical professional to be that way. Put yourself in thier shoes!

I have worked in hospitals for over 20 years and the majority of hospital workers are kind, caring, empathetic people. You might want to ask yourself what aspect of YOUR behavior may be provoking that reaction. We are human and someone who treats us poorly is unlikely to see our best personality.
As for "this kind of behavior doesn't happen in other businesses" what cave have you been living in? I have been maltreated everywhere from restaurants to hardware stores, regardless of how nice and patient I have been. People are people, everywhere you go.
