I'm having an EEG tomorrow....?!

Question: I fainted or had a seizure the other day. Not sure which one. I had a Glucose Tolerance Test done today and am having an EEG tomorrow. If it doesn't show anything the doc is gonna do a CT Scan. Just wondering what an EEG consists of & what kind of info it gives you. Thanks!!

EEG's are very easy, very relaxing tests. No pain, no needles, no medications. You'll lay there while the technician parts your hair and marks your head with a special pencil. Then, on the marks they made, they'll apply several dozen electrodes with this slightly sticky stuff. Once all of the electrodes are properly placed, you just lay there and let the tech's do their work. The electrodes will measure your electrical brain waves. The worst part of the test for me was when they put a strobe light in front of me. They do this because people with epilepsy can have seizures due to flashing lights. They actually want you to have a measurable reaction, so that's why the use this stimulus - to provoke a reaction to be measured. After about 30 minutes of testing, the tech's will remove the electrodes and wash your hair....then you're done. I've had several EEG's and I promise you, it's cake.

an eeg reads your brain waves by attaching electrodes to your scalp-a non-evasive procedure that doesn't hurt you

The test is performed by an EEG technician in a specially designed room that may be in your health care provider's office or at a hospital. You will be asked to lie on your back on a table or in a reclining chair.

The technician will apply between 16 and 25 flat metal discs (electrodes) in different positions on your scalp. The discs are held in place with a sticky paste. The electrodes are connected by wires to an amplifier and a recording machine.

The recording machine converts the electrical signals into a series of wavy lines that are drawn onto a moving piece of graph paper. You will need to lie still with your eyes closed because any movement can alter the results.

You may be asked to do certain things during the recording, such as breathe deeply and rapidly for several minutes or look at a bright flickering light.

How to Prepare for the Test Return to top

You will need to wash your hair the night before the test. Do not use any oils, sprays, or conditioner on your hair before this test.

Your health care provider may want you to stop taking certain medications before the test. Do not change or stop medications without first talking to your health care provider.

You should avoid all foods containing caffeine for 8 hours before the test.

EEG is an electroencephalogram. It measures the electrical output and function of your brain. Electrodes are attached to your scalp and they flash lights in your eyes, and then let you go to sleep for a while as they monitor your brains electrical activity.

its a simple procedure in which a metal leads adhere to ur scalp and record the electrical activity of ur brain to show the impulses, and being printed out on paper in a linear graphic manner.
EEG electric encepfalograph
nothing to worry about

My son had his first EEG when he was 3yrs old. There's nothing to it, dont worry. All you have to do is lie on a couch while they attach wires to your head and chest with a special glue. This feeds a monitor with information showing your brainwave spikes which will determine if you are taking seizures. You will be asked to look at strobe lights, etc to find out if you are photo sensitive.
I've had a CT scan and there's nothing to that either, you have to drink some liquid, then you lie on a bed and this 'large polo mint' moves up and down your body while the radiographer tells you to breath in and out at different times.
Hope everything works out ok for you x

An EEG is an Electro Encephalogram and Electroencephalography (EEG) is the measurement of electrical activity produced by the brain as recorded from electrodes placed on the scalp.

So if there is anything going screwie in your brain it will show up on a graph that looks like when you see an earth quake being recorded on that big roll of paper...

I had one of these when I was like, 3 years old or so because I had seizures because of the standard child vaccinations... I'm that one out of 3000 that has a reaction...

They slap a bunch of little suction cups to your head and they make you lay flat and read the results...

Easy as pie.

Good luck! I really hope you just fainted!!!!
