Why would people start drinking and smoking in the first place? I am 21 and neve!

Question: Ok, very early on I in school I learned some of the effects of drinking and smoking. I learned that smoking is very unhealthy for you and the diseases and problems it can cause and I learned that you can become drunk if you drink enough. So I said why drink at all if it's something that could make you become drunk at some point instead of just drinking Orange soda or apple juice? With those beverages, you can drink until your hearts content and yet can still drive later on to go anywhere you please. I am 21 years old and I have never a smoke or drank at all in my life. Well, other than the secondhand stuff I might get from other idiots like my 27 year old bro who recently moved back in. Yes, I have never drank alcogol either and guess what I have no tickets and no blemishes on my driving record. Nothing ever wrong happened to me in a car. No children and I am going back to college with a job this month. Ugh, some people smoke and drink together. So gross. Why would they even start that

Your smart :D

sure drinking can be fun sometimes, but you definitly dont give in to peer pressure.

Smoking is NASTY. it smells bad, and i can hardly breath when im around it. It sounds like you have a FULL life ahead of you minus liver problems, and lung cancer :]

have fun.

peer pressure

Peer Pressure.

My Dad started smoking because his army buddies did. Then he stopped because me and my Mom didn't. :D

It's all about influence. Teaching a kid early on that smoking/drinking are bad habits will give them that mentality and will make them less susceptible to smoking/drinking in the future.

i have never understood why either. i ask that same thing about drugs. i usually ask what the point is to all of it. and i tell them if they can give me a answer that i haven't heard before then i will never ask them again. there are some people that will think about it for a while, and come back to me and tell me there isn't a point or a reason to be doing it. so i ask them why do they do it. i was amazed to find out that half of the people that gave me that answer actually stopped drinking, smoking, and doing drugs.

Some people simply want to fit in with others they spend time with. Some are looking for a rush they don't think nthey can get with artificial stimulation.

It is used to compensate for something that the person is lacking or beleives they are lacking.

Friends and family, seeing it on tv. It is everywhere and kids want to look cool and not be lame, it's kinda sad. I'm 25 and I have never smoked and never will, everyone that I know that smokes started at 18 or younger because they had friends or family that did it and wanted to be cool too. I started drinking at like 17 but I've only been drunk a a couple times... well if you minus the year I turned 21. Again, my friends drank and I wanted to go out and have fun with them, have you ever went out with a bunch of drunks? It's much more tolerable when you have a couple yourself.

I think teenagers should just hold off, you have plenty of time to waste your money on that stuff when you are older, and you are much cooler for saying no and being your own person, don't follow the crowd.

You sound perfect and I agree smoking and drinking is not a smart choice, but neither is judging people for the personal choices that they make in thier own lives. Why do you care what other people do? It is freedom of choice!!!
