Often in the winter, people run their heat all night and it dries out the air....therefore drying out your mucous membranes. When you wake up, the dryness causes you to cough until your mucous membranes remoisten. Try using a humidifier at night and see if that helps. They are relatively inexpensive (from $15 - $ 40) and can be found at Target, Wal Mart, Walgreens, and even large grocery stores and pharmacies. You can choose between cool mist or warm....the cool is usually best as it doest cause condensation in your room. If that doesn't help, consult your doctor...but since appears to be a seasonal thing...the humidifier will probably do the trick.

Are you a smoker? If so that could be the problem. Maybe see your doctor

I get something like this in the winter, and it could be a couple things.

1. Possible pet allergies? If you sleep, you have the potential to be around pet hair for many hours, so when you wake up you could have a cough.

2. If its a dry cough, changes in humidity, this is a killer for me, makes it hard to exercise in winter, and tend to cough more.

3. The most likely, and what causes my morning cough is a buildup of drainage. That fun flem cough feeling in the morning happens all the time. Sudaphed helps

The air during the winter months is VERY dry. You might try leaving a humidifier or humidifiers on 24/7 until Spring. Also, you might sleep with a vaporizer on. You can get them in a drugstore or Wal-Mart, etc. They are fairly inexpensive. If that doesn't help, seek help from your doctor.

It's one of a few likely possibilities.
It may be that you are allergic to something in your house (maybe dust, maybe some chemicals in the air, maybe pets, etc.), and while you sleep, you are just collecting the allergens, so your body reacts when you wake up. That happens to me when I'm in a room with dust.
It may be an asthmatic reaction, but that's usually accompanied by shortness of breath and/or coughing throughout the day.
It may be that you just don't have enough humidity in your place, especially since you said "it usually happens during the winter". If it's a dry cough that is soothed shortly after you swallow and/or take a drink of water, that's probably it. An easy fix for that is a humidifier that you use during the winter.
