8 year old daughter had tonsils and adenoids removed??!

Question: My daughter had her tonsils and adenoids removed Friday morning. The healing process is going as good as can be expected. I do have a question though. She has developed a cough in the last hour or so. It isn't a bad cough, just painful to her. Is this a normal thing after the surgery or should I contact her doctor? It isn't a constant cough either. If it was I would be on the phone with the doctor instead of being on here. I feel like I just might be worried for nothing and don't want to wake up the doctor in the middle of the night. Can anyone help put me at ease here???

Unless she's running a fever or showing other symptoms, I wouldn't worry. The cough is probably just a reaction to the soreness in her throat and maybe some congestion due to the anesthesia she underwent. Coughing is almost always a side effect of anesthesia.

Just keep an eye on it, don't think there's any need to call the doctor in the middle of the night. If it seems worse in the morning, or if you're still worried about it, definitely DO call the doctor, if only for reassurance.

I had my tonsils out when I was 19 (nearly 20) and I still remember how painful it was. The surgery was a complete success and well worth it (I'd had so much trouble with tonsillitis in the preceding years) but it was certainly painful for a few days after. Lots of popsicles! Also, perhaps you were told to expect ear-pain in 4-5 days or so ... that's pretty painful, too. I had a prescription painkiller for that (which I hated to take), so I took ibuprofen, which worked fine.

Good Luck!

well i had that done aswell...my mother had me eating icecream and colds all the time ...maybe try that (suggesting bc it might help if ur not allready doing it)

I had my tonsils and adenoids removed when I was six and I got a cough shortly after the procedure. My throat was extremely raw and sore so you shouldn't have to worry unless it gets worse. I suggest giving her Popsicles or ice cream to sooth her throat...it works wonders.

A close friend just went through with this operation, and although she didn't cough so much, her throat was in a considerably sore state. I'm no medical expert, but some cough syrup and lozenges ought to take care of it.
