Why do people look at me weird when I tell them how my mom died?!

Question: When I was born I weighed in at 11lb 2oz and was born by emergency c-section. My mom lost alot of blood so they gave her a blood transfusion. Well in the early 80's they didnt screen the blood for dieases much. Well because of the blood she recieved she contracted HIV and later on it turned into full blown AIDS. Me and my younger brother had to be tested for yrs. I am now 26. She died when I was 10 almost 11 and people stare at me and sometimes even take a step back when I tell them how she died. I have even had people put her down for it. I mean I know the diease is horrible but why do people treat me weird after they find out. It is to the point I dont bring up my bio mom because It hurts when I get a reaction like that. What way can I tell people what happened to her with out people freaking out or thinking I am some diease ridden person.
I usually say "My mom had a tranfusion after I was born and she contracted AIDS from it and after a 10 yr battle she passed away"
I dont get it!

Because people are ignorant! I am so sorry for your loss and for the hurt people have caused you and your family. People don't understand that it could have just as easily been their family.

Reading through the answers I do not believe you should lie, you shouldn't have to lie to people to make up for their ignorance! Be proud of your mom and how brave of a person she was!

People can be mean. I would not let them get you down. It was not your mom fault or yours. pay no attention to them

people can be cruel and ignorant.simply say "my mother had cancer, she died when i was 10." yeah, its a lie,but its easier on you.sorry this happened to you.of course,ur best friends and people u trust can kno.good luck.u can also try "my mom died after a long illness when i was 10.i'd rather not talk about it."thats not a lie at all,but it deflects further questions.

It shows the idiots in this world! I am so sorry about your mom. It could be any of our Moms that this happened to. Tell people to pull their heads out of their rear ends and grow up!

It's called fear of the unknown. Some people are probably afraid of catching it from you. The ones that put her down for it are probably of the type of people that believe that when something bad happens to you it's because you did something bad.

I'm sorry for your mom & you & your whole family.
I dont understand peoples reaction to that.
Just dont tell them the circumstance about your moms death, its none of their buisness. If they treat you that wat they arent worth knowing anyway.

I just do not think it is any ones business how your mother died. Just say that she got sick when you were born, and then finally died from it. People are so rude and uneducated. I mean this is the not the 1960's anymore. People just slay me. You need to hold your head up high. You must of had a great mother. I am very sorry you lost her the way you did. But to have others be the way they are is just not right. I want to say I am sorry for these very ignorant people in our society.

Because they are ignorant. What isn't understood is taken as a threat. There is nothing wrong with how you tell people the way your mother died. You could go another route and say " My died when I was 10, it was from complications of my birth". That would keep them scratching their heads for a while. But just remember that it really is no ones business how she died. You could also look them straight in the eye and say "Why do you ask"? Good Luck and God Bless
