Why are people in the South convinced that the cold will make them sick?!

Question: I have teach Pre-K in GA and am not allowed to take the children out if it is below 40 degrees because my boss and the kids' parents are convinced they will get sick. It doesn't matter how many medical professional say that simply isn't true. They also think their child will get deathly ill if they go outside with a cough and a runny nose. My husband grew up in GA and used to go outside all the time. It just seems to be the new generation of parents that believe this. You would think they would realize their child gets sick even if they stay in. What has caused this stupidity?

It's not really stupidity, just ignorance, and lack of motivation to become more educated! Sometimes people think they already know everything and so they never try to take in new information, (or at least new to them)

becous we are not used to cold cuz its warm 80% of the year and no one wants a cold and no one wants there kid to get a cold ether so stay inside and have them color or somthing

The cold might make them sick if they aren't used to it and don't dress properly when in a colder climate.

very cold temps do make the body work on keeping warm and therefore does ~somewhat~ weaken the immune sys

cheers!

Its because they name the the cold "COLD".

Ya see there. The average Joe right there would directly link the germ to the weather.

Cold weather won't get them directly sick but the extreme temperature changes will stress out their body and make them more susceptible to germs.

I'm born and raised in the south and I don't believe that crap! Neither do my friends but the old folks in my family do. My guess is was hard work was more revered than say education.

So you're basically calling me stupid and you don't even know me. Wow have you got some class! Yes children can get sick from it being cold outside...then you have all the germs in the classroom from other children being sick because of the cold weather. My stepdaughter wore a skirt and a short sleeved shirt the other day to school-because she thought she could be slick and not get sick just because it was FREEZING outside. Well guess what-that night she had a sore throat and her temperature was rising. So experience it first before you go judging people about their beliefs oh wait their "stupidity" as you northerners call it.

hello,
i am from the south and first off i would like to say i took what you said very offensive....but any way....its not the cold but our immune system that is not use to the up down temps and the way the weather has been over the last 10-15 years its been crazy so our body's have no clue what to prepare for....our body built immunity against the viruses and the weather that produces it....and if its been too warm so to say the germs are not killed off by the cold so it makes our immune system weaker to fight them off.... also the virus host on a warm climates..... so say its been 70 one day and then 35 the next the virus host on our bodys and thats why they say its the cold that causes it....because viruses like warm climates to live and what a better way is to live in the human body because it is warm.....i really hope you get what i am saying...so the doctors are right in a way....but you need to ask them about the warmth and how bacteria grows????? the moral of it is if it has been a roller coaster of temperatures like 70 80 to 25 35 then there are bacterias that have grown and host on small children because their immunity has not been built up against it and it attacks their immune system first.....unlike ours that have had many many strands of viruses go through it....so are you going to take a new born baby out in the really cold temps because the doctor says you can not get sick from the cold or are you going to bundle the baby up to protect it from the cold....don't you think if the therory you have stated we would not wear coats in the winter and pants in the summer....well i think i have made my statement and hopefully you get the drift..
