Why Do Some Teachers believe using the Washroom is Privilege and not a Right?!

Question: Why Do Some Teachers believe using the washroom is Privilege and not a Right? Don't they understand that the student's health is important and the dangers of denying a student to go to the bathroom during class and making them hold their urine for entire class is not healthy?

I think this shouldn't be a power left to teachers. They need to respect student's rights. I would complain to the administration.

because they should've gone at break! They should be going to the toilet every break time, instead of chit chattering away! well im not a toilet user very much at school

power trips

because it would be hard to teach if every 2 minutes some kid said I gotta go, go in between periods

Probably because it's been abused tremendously in their class -- students claiming to need to go in order to cheat on tests, or skip on class, or chat on their cellphones, or smoke (they think secretly...)

I think that if they let you go whenever you wanted, some students might take advantage and keep leaving lessons. You do get plenty of breaks dont you? If there is a medical condition then Im sure if you took ina doctors letter you would be allowed.

absolutely, a teacher can get in big trouble for denying a child to go to the bathroom when they legitamently have to use it. if the student is constantly asking to go, yes, the teacher may decline his request, but if you REALLy have to go... then they should let you go.

True, but they have to try and stop trouble causers wanting to go in every lesson, just to mess around.

For much the same reason that some students regard the washroom as a social recreational and drug-taking area rather than one for ablutions!

I have no answer for your question, but I couldn't agree more with what you are saying, especially in the case of younger children. Some teachers just seem to get drunk on the perceived authority of their position. Its appalling, frankly.

A teacher has a hard job to do, if it is minutes from the end of the lesson they will typically expect the child to hang on. If its in the middle of the lesson they will generally let them go. It is not something you are taught how to deal with. The teacher has to weigh up whether there is a likelihood of this child just walking around aimlessly disrupting other lessons or whether they are actually telling the truth.

Why don't students understand tht they have breaks in which to go to the toilet and not disrupt the class?

I agree it is happening at my sons primary school. They lose time from play if they go during lessons!! I have told him if the teacher won't let him go to the loo to do it in class!!

Their ego's

they are controll freaks

I think its different for high school kids who are perfectly capable of thinking ahead to go in between lessons and holding it for a little while if necessay, although they should be allowed to go when necessary as long as they don't abuse the privilege (going every lesson etc).

But for younger children they don't tend to think ahead, and not allowing them to go is cruel. A teacher made my sister wet herself in class because she refused to let her go to the toilet, and I can remember the same thing happening to several kids in primary school. That is just cruel and unnecessary.

Because they are egotistical little people who have no power over anyone else.

cos they're pricks and have lost grip on the real adult world cos they are making the rules in your school world

Because teachers need to be brought up to date. They are ignorant of health issues. If we don't teach them then they will never know. Smarten up you teachers.

I remember getting into trouble for stopping at the toilets between classes. It's because teachers can't survive in the adult world, only in schools where they get to boss and bully kids about.

I'm totally with you on this one. "Holding it" too long, if it's done too often, can actually have some negative health effects down the road.

Maybe you can have your doctor write you a note, that you can then bring to the teacher along with a copy for the principal.

If the teacher's power trip persists, maybe your family can threaten them with legal action -- and follow through with it if necessary.

If you're in the US, there's a law called the Americans With Disabilities Act, and I'm sure spina bifida is included in it. If you're not in the States, I'm sure your country has a similar law.

Under the ADA, employers and schools have to make reasonable accomodations for people with disabilities.

The last thing any school board wants is legal troubles, so if you stand up for your rights, I'm sure they will back down.
