Backbone problems, scoliosis?!

Question: Can an adult also have scoliosis? I went to a doc because I had pain at my back, after the X-rays doc said nothing was wrong with me but it was also visible that my spine was curved a little to my right. Doc said it was normal not everyone's spine is straight but I'm still a little worried.

I'm almost 23 years old, 5'2'' and 98 lbs. (Christina Aguilera type of skinny, not Nicole Ritchie type) My doc said exercises would probably help my pain because I sit over 8 hours everyday and have no muscles..

Anyona had/have the same problem? Can a 23 year old have scoliosis?

Start out by seeing your family doctor. You can get an xray and your GP can tell you if you have scoliosis or not. If you do, get a referral to a scoliosis specialist and then let him/her examine your back. He/she will be able to give you appropriate recommendations. (A doctor that is not a scoliosis specialist is *not* qualified to treat scoliosis.)

The recomendations may be to do nothing (you don't have scoliosis), PT (exercises will strengthen your core musches and perhaps make you feel better), swimming, yoga, pilates (same as PT), or if your curve is bad enough, surgery might be recommended.

My gut feel from your question is that you don't have anything majorly wrong and that some exercises may do you some good.

Chiropractors, message therapists, acupuncturists, etc., also can't fix scoliosis. These people adjust the soft, connective tissues and that may (or may not, you can't tell ahead of time) make you feel better, but remember, scoliosis is not a connective tissue disease. Your spine is growing curved.

sure they can, if it was not detected during your childhood. Usually females stop growing by 18. So if you do have scoliosis, it is most likley it developed during your childhood. I also have a slight curve. It is not enough to be scoliosis, To have scoliosis your curve has to be greater than 10 degress. It is fairly common is have a small curve in your back though. If you do have a slight curve, it is most likley your pain is being caused by something else. Maybe you should have an x-ray done.
good luck=)

My dad just started having scoliosis problems, at about the age of 70, plus or minus. yes, it can become a problem at any point in your life. You should get a second opinion, but don't worry about it too much. Go to a chiropractor, if you want. I've found it helps all sorts of issues, and if you can bring the xrays, so much the better. A chiro will probably take a baseline set for himself, just to see what he's dealing with, and can compare, as sometimes curves can change kind of quickly. Actually, at 98 lbs, you're really too thin. Have a steak or something tonight. But seriously, have a second opinion, and talk to either a chiro or a Physical Therapist regarding, if nothing else, specialized exercises for your back.
