Why are lifespans increasing even though we're supposed to be getting less h!

Question: We're always being told that everybody is getting fatter and less healthy, and fatal diseases like heart disease and cancer are on the increase, yet it's widely accepted that the average lifespan in the western world is getting longer and longer. How can these two apparently contradictory facts be reconciled?

The lifespans of those people who are now middle aged are probably increasing, but the next generation of youngsters who are OVERWEIGHT may have a problem in later life.
I think some of the talk of fatal diseases is to scare people into taking action. I have seen many kids between the ages of six and into early teens who have been grossly overweight but by the time they are in there early twenties have lost most of it.

I agree with Bobwit. Also, over the past 50 years, there have been enormous improvements in hygiene, standards of living and medical science.

Pharmaceutical advances such as the statin group of drugs are preventing deaths from major vessel disease such as heart attacks and strokes. Other medical advances such as earlier detection of disease and a more proactive "prevention IS better than cure" approach by General Practice are also preventing deaths. This however will be reduced however by the continuing spread of obesity and diabetes as our determination to eat ourselves into an earlier grave will test even the most advanced medical developments.

I dont believe that we are living longer. The bible stated that man lives for 3 score years and ten. (70). But people around me dont seem to be living for much longer, despite medical advances, better nutrition and hygiene.
I heard that we humans have the potential to live to the ripe old age of 120, but nobody does. Saying that, the longer you live, the longer you are expected to live due to medical advances.
