How much sleep should I be getting?!


Question: Im 20yrs old if that helps.

Not sure on how much sleep will be enough.

Also, Is it true if you sleep for longer, you are more tired through out the day?

Par for the course is always given as 8 hours for adults.

Males need 7 hours sleep
Females 8 hours sleep,

I dunno, theres no right or wrong answer, the average hours of sleep a person gets is between 7-9. everyones different i guess.

You need 7 to 8 hours a night. You can be more groggy sleeping more than 8.

conventional wisdom says 6-9 hours depending is sufficient depending on activities, diet, metabolism, etc., with 8 being the generally accepted "norm".

Ok---here is the formula for a contented person.
8 hours work
8 hours recreation
8 hours sleep.
The secret is balance.

some people get away with a few hours a night others like me need way more and get grouchy if its less than 10

7 to 8 hours probably. to me, sleeping longer makees me more tired throughout the day. when I have lack of sleep, but I do get some sleep, I'm wide awake for the whole day.

20 hours sleep a day is what a 10 year old told me.

we should all get at least 8hrs sleep and yes in my experience the longer i sleep the more i feel tired in the day

I own a health and nutrition business and have taught fitness. The answer to this question depends on how healthy you are eating and how fit you keep yourself. If you are eating well balanced meals, high in green vegetables and lean meats, low in fats, high in fiber - not using a lot of alcohol - and using a good supplement program, and if you are keeping yourself fit, then you may be okay with 6 - 7 hours of sleep per night. If you are eating a lot of deep fat fried foods, lots of soda pop, and/or doing a lot of drinking alcohol, and aren't keeping fit, then your body will be more stressed and you will find yourself needing more sleep. If you are finding you need more than 8 - 9 hours of sleep per night, at 20 years old, then you might want to look at a lifestyle change and get to a physician for a checkup.
I'm 55, and my natural body rhythms have me at just 6 hours or so of sleep per night. But I eat healthy, have a great supplement program, and am at a fitness level of most athletes in their 20's. So the answer to your question is going to be that it depends on how you are taking care of yourself.
I will add, that less than around 5 - 6 hours per night of sleep doesn't give your body enough time, usually, to recover itself, and your metabolism may very well slow down. Your body will try to recover itself by falling asleep for short periods during the day - maybe for a few seconds or a few minutes here and there - on it's own. You don't want this to happen while you are driving, so if you are having to get by on short nights because of work or school, you may want to look at scheduling some sort of naps during the day.

there is no particular answer for that but i can tell you that it has been proven that sleeping longer can cause you to be sleepy during the day try sticking to a routine if you go to bed late and wake up early fine. evryone is different so it just depends on what you like the best.

on QI, stephen fry said that the recommended amount is 6-10 hours but people who sleep 2-4 hours often live longer. I dont know if this is true or not though, somehow I doubt it.
