The test is usually quite easy...at least the ones I've had done and witnessed. They essentially put headphones on you. And you're in a sound proof room. They play tones in your ears and you tell them when you hear the tones.
Once that's done, if they've found that your hearing isn't normal, they may do the same thing, but instead of using headphones on your ears they use a headphone like device that sits on the bone just behind the ear. This bone carries sounds to the brain. This will allow them to see if it's just an inner ear problem (such a fluid in the ear) or if it's a permanent type of hearing loss.
You may also have a pressure test. For this they put an ear plug type thing in your ear and it tests the ear drums reaction to air. If the ear drum moves that is normal. If it doesn't it indicates there is fluid in your ear that may need to be drained.
