Heartburn...?!

Question: I have acid reflux that has been flareing up because of stress and caf. food. It is going into my arm and jaw. Yuck!
I took 300mg of zantaz(my perscription) and 2 malox. Nothing has kicked in yet, and the acid just keeps getting worse. Any tips on anything to take or relive this?

Try Prilosec OTC

Rather than acid reflux, you may have GERD, or gastroesophageal reflux disease. Some thoughts on GERD (which I have):

1. Acid reflux is a symptom of GERD.
2. GERD happens when your lower esophageal sphincter http://www.nbc10.com/2006/0209/6867277.j... doesn't close and stomach acid goes into your esophagus.
3. This causes esophageal inflammation and erosion.
4. Esophageal inflammation and erosion can cause Barrett's Esophagus, a precancerous condition.
5. Zantac is a histamine inhibitor. It reduces production of stomach acid.
6. Medications such as AcipHex, Nexium, Protonix, and Prilosec are PPIs, or protein-pump inhibitors. They reduce or stop stomach acid production. Their mechanism is slightly different than Zantac. Prilosec is available without a prescription.
7. Maalox and other antacids are not very effective against GERD.
8. You may want to talk to your physician about trying a PPI if your Zantac isn't working well.
9. You may want to read about GERD diets at http://www.midwestgastro.com/diet_nutrit... and http://www.gicare.com/pated/edtgs03.htm. You seem to already know what foods to avoid, but a little more information won't hurt.
10. Read more about GERD at http://www.gicare.com/pated/edtgs03.htm

I had no luck with Zantac. AcipHex and Nexium both worked for me. Although all PPIs are supposed to be alike, sometimes they don't work alike for each individual.

change your eating habits!!
