Question: I saw a news special on this some time ago, where some pediatric dentists physically restrained crazy kids to the dentist's chair. Some kids who would not cooperate had their nose held so they could shove in a mouthpiece holding it open.
I've never seen this before and I didn't know dentists actually did this.

I can't think of anything that would tramatize a child more while in a dentist chair. That's insane, and would probably give them a fear of the dentist for life.
The practical thing to do would be to sedate them if they have to have dental work done.
I'd grab any dentist that grabbed my child!

In order to protect yourself against undue physicallity by a dentist , you should, when he reaches for your nose, reach for his testicles and advise him that you beleive in reciprocity.
That way you will not hurt each other.
It's the civilized way to handle things.Who knows, you might become his main squeeze.

The truth is that the parents have the choice in the matter. If the parent has a problem with it, they need to control their kid and get him to open his mouth, or they can just not bring their kid to the dentist.
You dont want to sedate children because that involves some pretty powerful drugs which are not deemed safe for children by the FDA. The kids hearts might not be able to take it and the kid might not wake up again. Children should only be sedated for emergencies such as required surguries.
Yes its bizarre and I am sure the kid will complain for the rest of his life, BUT it is in no way hurting the child. The dentist is trying to help the kid by cleaning his teeth or fixing a cavity. Remember that all the kid has to do is open their mouth. Most kids just dont get the seriousness of cavities and gum disease so they resist it not knowing about the pain and ache they will get for not going to the dentist.
