Stammering and stuttering can have many causes:
* Developmental stuttering is a developmental disorder beginning in early childhood and continuing into adulthood at least 20% of children of those affected. It usually starts by 3 years old. There is still a lot of discussion going on about what causes this - some doctors think it is genetics, others think it is trauma during birth or early childhood
* In rare cases, stuttering may be acquired in adulthood as the result of a neurological event such as a head injury, tumour, stroke or drug abuse/misuse.
There are many treatments, but most involve speach therapy. There is also some medications that have been shown to help.
