Why is the Mayo Clinic, arguably the world's best hospital, located in Roche!

Because excellent doctors were drawn to it by it's specialties & research opportunities. It is privately funded and has accommodations for patients & families of out-of-state patients. They also have a huge speakers bureau that goes all over to conferences to present their work to other professionals.
I think they could also get more land and amenities by being situated outside an expensive city that has many competing hospitals.

Well it was convenient to start it there and there it is.
They have other Mayos in other states. The main hsopital is in Rochester, but they have a clinic in FL, and AZ as well.
There are excellent hospitals in every state. The Mayo Clinic is just more well known because they do a lot of research and are a destination hospital. People who can afford it will go there and bring their whole families. It's almost like a cross between a resort and a hospital.
