Why do I have a mouth ulcer?!

Question: how do I get rid of it? It hurts :'(

Answers: how do I get rid of it? It hurts :'(

The most common type of mouth ulcers are called 'apthous' ulcers. They are probably viral. (though no virus has been identified.)This means they should not be given antibiotics as there have no effect. There behaviour is similar to cold sores, in that they are recurrent, come out when we are run down and we never seem to develop immunity. Here the similarity ends, because unlike herpetic cold sores there is no treatment.

Each ulcer lasts about 10 days, but you can get further crops erupting, so each episode may last longer than that.

Ice,ice cream and cold soft items, become the easiest things to eat. Teething gels sometimes help. There are 2 prescription drugs for apthous ulcers, Corlan Pellets and Adcortyl in Orobase paste. Both are steroids, only reduce the nipping a bit and neither hastens resolution.

stress maybe

You can get gel for it from the chemist, or put salt on it- but that hurts! Sometimes they just crop up. If you're stressed, you may have chewed the inside of your mouth in your sleep

They occur because of either a small wound (trauma) or bad luck. No one knows what causes them. There are lots of preparations at the drugstore. My favorite is one called Zilactin; it numbs the area and has a protective coating to help it heal, sort of like a band-aid.

smoking too much crack

salt on it yes pain so what, if you were a Tory MP you would pay for such agonies as that so enjoy

I used to get them by hitting my gums hard with my toothbrush. They will go away over time, but I reccomend Orajel. It numbs the pain and feels good.

Gargle with salt water............................

You just get them from time to time. The best thing to do is dab some salt onto it. Tastes gross but does help it heal and go away. (I am assuming this in an ulcer inside your mouth).

The are quite common and eating excessive amount of crisps can cause them.

If you are in the UK, 'Bonjela' or better still 'Aloclair' will help get rid and alleviate the pain.

I get mouth ulcers if i eat sweets for some reason, i think i am allergic to bicarbonate. Have you eaten something you haven't had for a while?? Maybe it's that...

I get them all the time. You really just have to wait it out. There are many reasons why it may have appeared. I have no idea why I get them.. I bit my tongue the other day though, and then the next day I got two tongue ulcers from where my teeth bit into my tongue... talk about painful. Warm salt water is supposed to help. Numbing gels work well, but temporarily. I'm sorry you have one! They do hurt.

There are many reasons you could have an ulcer. Your best bet is to go to the doctor and get antibiotics in case it spreads.

A few things you can do to subside the pain are:

Go to a pharmacy and get a pain reliever application (place directly on sore for numbing effect).
Boil water with salt, wait for it to cool to a manageable temperature and rinse, gargle, repeat

There are many processes which can lead to ulceration of the oral tissues. In some cases they are caused by an overreaction by the body's own immune system.

Factors that appear to provoke mouth ulcers include stress, fatigue, illness, injury from accidental biting, hormonal changes, menstruation, sudden weight loss, food allergies and deficiencies in vitamin B12, iron and folic acid.

theres some stuff my girl used to take to heal up her tongue piercing. it would be at any supermarket.

You are run down and bit stressed, try gargling with warm water and sea salt.

Generally mouth ulcers come from either a virus or inflammation in the mouth caused by food or drink.

In order to get over the ulcer, clean it out by swishing warm salt water across the sore (don't swallow). Listerine also works. Then avoid any foods that contain acid such as tomatoes or ketchup, oranges, or sodas. If you leave the sore alone (don't keep running your tongue over it) your body will quickly cover it with a thin skin layer. It should only take a few days for it to go away all together provided you avoid those foods.

best wishes

they come from stress & malnutrition, they go away on their own but you can get some stuff to numb it from your doc
