Can long term opiate abuse cause you to have seizures.?!

Question: My friend is telling me he is scared because he has been having seizures. He has been addicted to opiate drugs and continues to do them. Is this a result of the drug abuse or is it some other underlying medical issue. Thank you for all your help.

Opiates can certainly cause seizures, especially if the person is coming off of the drugs.

However, seizures can be unpredictable and your friend should certainly see a doctor. I know he might be scared to tell a doctor about his drug use, but the physician's job is to worry about your friend's health above all else. Anything your friend tells his doctor is confidential and won't lead to "legal" repercussions.

If your friend needs help but doesn't have the money for a regular doctor visit, you could try calling your local Health Department. They might offer or know of some local resources.

Yes seizures are treated commonly with opiates. If enough of the medication is taken, it could lower the seizures threshold and cause and a seizure.

if seizures go untreated you can die from them. he needs to see a neuroligist. I had several and almost died from them. you friend needs to take the first step and see a doctor. tell him you will go with him since he told you what has been going on.
