Can you still get plastic surgery if you have asthma problems?!

Question: I have asthma problems. Sometimes it gets bad. But I don't always have the flareups. In anycase I mentioned this to my plastic surgeon's office and the ladies seemed a bit concerned. My surgery cost several thousand, and I'm going in TOMORROW for it, that's when it's scheduled, and it's already paid for, but I just brought up that I've been having asthma flareups in the last week or two, and now I'm nervous.

Will they cancel or postpone my surgery, or will they still go on with it?

I'm not sure what they do if someone were to have asthma flareups?

In general, you should still be able to have most any kind of surgery. Think about it...what do they do when asthmatics need mandatory surgery?

But, any sort of complication can make a small procedure turn into a medical nightmare. Disclosing an existing condition (which you've done) is always the best policy, you don't want the operating team working in the dark with regards to this!

Effectively, what you've given your surgical team is one more thing to worry about. They can manage this, but it means more work for them. It's even possible that they might delay in order to make some special accommodation for you, but relatively unlikely that they'll cancel the surgery completely.

It is not recommended but you should ask a doctor for advise.

Well, definitely have the medications you need in the case of flare-ups...as you should ALWAYS have them on hand.

Nervous isn't going to help with the asthma....and if it is paid for, they money is still on the books. It can be done another time.

Elective surgery is not so important it cannot wait until your asthma is under control.

And you should have asked the doctor....we cannot know what office policy is.

Good luck, dear one... I pray for the steady hands.

If you are going to have localized anesthesia, it will probably be OK...but I would postpone it until my asthma calms down. Make SURE you discuss this with your surgeon thoroughly....you should be able to postpone. Better safe than sorry with a pretty face!
