You will have an IV and they will sedate so you won't be aware of the test. Simply put, they insert a scope into your rectum after they fill it with air to expand it so they can see. They look at the inside of your rectum/colon/cecum/intestinal tract and if they see anything like a polyp they will snip it off and test it. You're very young to be worried so try to relax. We've never had a patient remember what happened. I had one years ago without anything and it wasn't any big deal - promise!
I had one at 19. It's not that bad. The stuff you have to drink is really gross and it made me gag. Try to get general anesthesia instead of sedation though. I felt the whole thing but couldn't talk. The basics of what is going to happen is you have to get all of the solids out of your system and then they put a small hose with a camera on it in your rear. It's only like 10-15 minutes. Don't worry, it will be over before you know it.

I've had two. You have to drink this laxative to clean you out. It's not pleasant. Ask the Dr. if it comes in a pill form. They have you put on a gown and get on a gurney. They put you to sleep and put a scope down your throat and in your rectum. Mine didn't hurt. After wards they put you in a room to wake up and you fart a lot. Cause of the air that gets up there. Just let it out cause it don't smell bad. Good luck.
I have had a number of both types of exams. Neither of them are that unpleasant. The thought of them is worse than the experience.
First, the endoscopy. You get an IV inserted into your hand or arm. It just has some fluids in it, but it is where they will induce some sedation. You will probably get Versad and some demerol, a lovely cocktail. While you are still awake, they will spray your throat with a numbing spray. Then you will begin to get drowsy. While you are "sleeping," a small camera on the end of a lighted tube will be passed down your throat. You are not really asleep, but when the exam is over, you will not remember much about it and you will think you were asleep.
Second, the colonoscopy: The prep is worse than the procedure, as you will have to drink a rather vile, salty, oily laxative and then poop your brains out. Once you get to the exam, it is nearly the same as the endo. You will get an IV that will make you drowsy. You will lay on your side and be draped with sterile cloth. A lighted tube and camera will be inserted into your rectum..You will remember very little of the exam. Take some chap stick or lip gloss, as you can't drink any fluids until the procedure is over and your lips often get chapped and dry. Afterwards, you will sleep for awhile.
Someone will have to drive you home as you will still feel drowsy. After a lovely nap, you will wake up hungry and will feel OK. Your throat may be a tiny bit scratchy, but have some warm tea and honey and you will feel better. You may even get some of the pictures. I have colored pictures of the inside of my colon and my esophaegus. Good luck.
